Activist Group “Wake Up Sonoma” to Protest Controversial Heritage Foundation Initiative, Project 2025
Sonoma’s grassroots organization, Wake Up Sonoma, is making a stand against conservative policy implementation under Project 2025. The protest, scheduled for July 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., promises to gather hundreds of locals united in their repudiation of potential threats to democracy.
Project 2025, backed by the Heritage Foundation, seeks to enact various conservative policies if Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential election. Its critics warn of this project’s potential to restrict LGBTQIA+ rights and those of other marginalized communities. They also note the proposal’s authoritarian leanings as a part of the Heritage Foundation’s plan.
“Wake Up Sonoma sees Project 2025 as a threat to human and civil rights,” announced the organization, known initially as a watchdog for the Mattson-LeFever, in a recent press release. “As part of our mission and vision, we strongly oppose it.”
The press statement underscored the importance of public involvement, urging for a robust turnout from Sonoma Valley residents in the protest against the Heritage Foundation’s initiative. The message ended with a resolution: “This is very much a threat to our Democracy…We hope to see a very large turnout of Sonoma Valley Residents to speak up and say NO to Project 2025!”
Wake Up Sonoma plans on holding its demonstration parallel to the protests organized by nationwide human rights entities, including Stop The Coup 2025, the Center for Popular Democracy, and Rise and Resist. The strategic alignment aims to secure maximum visibility against Project 2025.
The protest event at the Sonoma Plaza will feature several influential speakers. Confirmed to attend are Larry Barnett, Sonoma Valley Planning Commission head and former Sonoma mayor; Reverend Dr. Curran Reichart of the First Congregational Church; and Marty Bennett from UNITE HERE Local 2.
