Conservative Groups Plan to Dismantle Federal Government Agencies if Trump Wins in 2025
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, conservative groups are gearing up for the possibility of former Republican President Donald Trump reclaiming the White House. In a nearly 1,000-page handbook released by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, a detailed plan known as “Project 2025” is outlined to reshape the federal government agencies.
The aim of Project 2025 is to undo what conservative groups see as the “damage” caused by liberal politicians and implement a wide-ranging agenda to give the executive branch more power. The plan includes a policy agenda, personnel changes, training programs, and a “180-day playbook” to pave the way for an effective conservative administration.
One of the key components of Project 2025 is to reclassify tens of thousands of federal workers as political appointees, allowing for mass dismissals of those who may oppose the conservative agenda. This includes the firing of up to 50,000 federal workers and the elimination of agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education.
Critics of Project 2025 have raised concerns about the potential consequences of such drastic changes. Mary Guy, a professor of public administration, warned that bringing back policies like Schedule F could create chaos within the civil service. Others have expressed fears that federal employees would be targeted as “the enemy” under the new administration.
U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, a Democrat from California, has been vocal in his opposition to Project 2025, calling it a “far-right roadmap” for Trump to seize supreme powers and undermine democratic institutions. To counter these measures, Democrats like Huffman are mobilizing efforts to combat the conservative agenda through public forums and coordinated messaging ahead of the elections.
In response to the criticism, a spokesperson for Project 2025 dismissed the concerns as “projection” and accused the Biden administration of abusing executive power. Despite some former Trump supporters raising concerns about government overreach, conservative groups remain committed to implementing their agenda if Trump wins the presidency in 2025.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the battle over the future of the federal government agencies and the balance of power in Washington D.C. is likely to intensify in the coming years. The outcome of the 2024 election will determine whether Project 2025 becomes a reality or faces opposition from those who seek to preserve democratic values and institutions.
